How to Create Effective Markdown Pricing
A useful markdown helps move suitable stock while keeping the price honest and easy to understand. The calculation is the simple part; timing and checkout accuracy matter just as much.
Set the purpose and timing
Identify the batch, remaining units, date and condition. Choose whether the goal is to move short-dated stock, clear a discontinued item or run a planned promotion. Start with enough time for shoppers to see the offer while the product is still appropriate to sell.
Check the numbers
A percentage reduction applies to the original selling price. At $8.00 with 25% off, the reduction is $2.00 and the new price is $6.00. If you have a target of $6.00, the required markdown is 25%. Verify your previous-price claim against the actual pricing history.
- Calculate the final price to cents.
- Check the unit price if displayed.
- Confirm whether the offer applies to one batch or all stock.
Make shelf and till agree
Update the authorised POS price and test a sample scan. The shelf sign needs the correct name, price and readable barcode where used. Place it with the product so customers are not misled about which item is reduced.
Review the outcome
Record units sold, units left and any discarded stock. A promotion can be successful at reducing waste even when the margin per unit is lower, but compare it to ordering and shelf placement alternatives. Avoid assuming every markdown causes the sale.
Worked example: sign and till reconciliation
A cereal box normally sells for $8 and the intended offer is 25% off. The discount is $2, so the new price is $6. If the shelf tag says $6 but the POS still charges $8, the arithmetic is correct and the customer experience is still wrong. The person preparing the offer should check the exact product barcode, any date-specific eligibility and the POS price before the sign goes up.
Write down when the offer begins, who approved it and when staff should remove the sign. If five boxes sell and four remain at the end, record those numbers rather than calling all nine a successful clearance. Check whether the lower price reached only the intended products, especially when multiple sizes or variations share similar packaging.
Treat the sign, POS price and stock record as one coordinated store action.
